SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 07, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — light curvethe company providing a cloud-native microservices platform for some of the world’s leading brands, today announced significant changes to the licensing model of its Acre Technology. Widely used by industry leaders in financial services, e-commerce, automotive, web services, cloud infrastructure, and gaming, Akka is uniquely able to deliver highly concurrent, distributed, and resilient event applications for Java and Scala. Lightbend is licensing all Akka modules from Apache 2.0 to BSL v1.1 (Business Source License), starting with Akka v2.7, which will be released in October.
“We have decided to change Akka’s license to ensure a healthy balance between all parties, shared responsibility and, by extension, contribute to the future development of Akka”, said Jonas Bonér, founder and CEO of Lightbend, as well as creator of Akka. “This will allow Akka to remain at the forefront of creating innovative solutions that are used by many globally recognized brands to build and run some of their most business-critical applications.”
The “open core” business model that Akka has relied on has demonstrated its limitations not only for Lightbend, but for many other organizations in similar circumstances. Once an OSS project becomes so critical to the day-to-day running of an organization, many large companies turn to making this software self-sufficient, without contributing anything further to its development or to the community as a whole. , despite the fact that, in many cases, these organizations generate significant profits by taking advantage of this “free” technology.
Under Akka’s new licensing model, any organization with less than $25 million in annual revenue will not need a license fee for production use of the software, but a $0 commercial license must. always be granted by Lightbend. For large enterprises with more than $25 million in annual revenue, a paid license plus a subscription, of which there are several options, are required for production use. The license does not allow backporting of any software released under the new license.
The Business Source License v1.1 was designed by MariaDB Corporation AB and has been used by Cockroach Labs among other organizations. The BSL is not an open-source license. It works in 2 steps:
- Commercial – The software is viewable (source available), downloadable and usable in non-production environments. Production use requires a software license from Lightbend.
- open-source – After 3 years, the source of this release will be released under the current Apache 2.0 license. The license offers a customizable “additional usage allowance” which will be used to grant usage for other OSS projects (specifically the Play Framework)
