DiGiCo has just announced the release of its latest software update version 3.0, increasing the processing power of its cost-effective and space-saving S-Series consoles. Version 3.0 offers an optional software expansion that increases the channel count from 48 to 60 flexible channels and 24 flexible buses, turning the S-series consoles into an S21+ or an S31+.
V3.0 includes two new Master bus configurations: LCR (Left Center Right) or LRM (Left Right Mono), providing additional control over channels via LCR mix or LRM mono gain. LCR or LRM are ideal for running an extended speaker setup or sending a mono mix alongside your stereo mix. And increasing the size of the master bus introduces no compromise: you always have access to all your buses and channels.
Software version 2.2 introduced OSC control of snapshots. Version 3.0 extends OSC control capabilities to channel processing controls. With the ability to control many aspects of channel and bus processing, including EQ and dynamics, this update adds enormous flexibility when integrating your S-Series console with external remote control systems. .
Version 3.0 now adds support for MADI sample rate conversion on the DMI-MADI-B and DMI-MADI-C. SRC allows the S21 or S31 to operate at a different sample rate from the connected MADI devices, providing useful flexibility when connecting to external MADI devices. This is commonly used for recording and virtual sound checks, and for maximum compatibility high speed MADI and SMUX 96k modes are supported.
Compatibility for DiGiCoAlso included is the Dante-based DQ-Rack, a compact 48-input, 24-output stage rack. When connected to your S-Series console via a [email protected] card, this offers a cost-effective extension that is perfect for touring and installation applications. Dante is commonly used for fixed installations and AV conferencing solutions. Support for the expanding Dante Rack range with the S21 and S31 consoles is therefore an important step and opens up the consoles to more markets and opportunities.
The S-series now uses GPIOs (general purpose inputs and outputs), with the S21 and S31 featuring a 1/4″ GPI and a 1/4″ GPO on the rear for connection to external devices. GPI can be used to trigger a specific snapshot or to trigger the previous or next snapshot.
GPOs are commonly used to trigger external devices with a contact closure. Adding a GPO message to your S-Series snapshots provides easy integration options as contacts can be scheduled to open or close with each snapshot. When a snapshot is triggered, you can use GPO to trigger a downlight, or dim or brighten house lights.
Dynamic EQ is a powerful processing feature built right into the channels and provides the ability to control the amount of EQ applied to a signal, depending on the signal level. This is often used to fix audio problems like proximity effect, or to de-ess a signal. Version 3.0 software adds grouping of this feature across multiple channels, a useful time saver when mixing a large number of similar inputs that all require similar processing.
When mixing, it’s useful to have a single tap control that sets the delay time across all your delays. With version 3.0, the Ten Tap Delay effect can now be added to the Global Tap Delay, so whichever internal delay effect you’re using, you always have access to the control you need.
Finally, since all channels of the S21 and S31 are flexible channels (meaning they can be mono or stereo), the optional software expansion allows up to 120 inputs to be processed across the 60 stereo channels and 48 output processing paths on all 24 channels. stereo groups or aux. It also includes the previously mentioned Master bus (including new LCR and LRM configurations) and the standard 10×8 matrix.
